This week a tutorial on how to paint a simple space themed base, and a more realistic main camera.
Simple space base
The inspiration for this base is the incredible space themed spray paint art that is being created by street and youtube artists all over the world. See here for reference. Usually this type of space art includes at least one planet, but I have to omit it as this base is too small. I’ll definitely add them in when I do a bigger project.
Main camera (and lenses)
The first step is a layer of glossy black. I’ll be using lacquer paints for this, but any kind will do as long as the layers don’t affect each other. Next is the darkest layer of blue for the entire camera. Next I used a 50/50 mix of my dark and light blue, applied to half the camera on the models left, to give the impression the camera is looking to the left. Then the lighest blue on the right most section. Then add a small dot of white paint in the corner opposite where the camera is looking. Finally I clean up the little paint mistakes. Now my aim was to make it look like the camera is pointed to the model’s left. I made a small mistake however, as the the lens shouldn’t be able to swivel all the way to the edge. Instead … … I think it should look like this, with a bit of the two darker shades still slightly visible. For reference, the top image is a reference for the camera looking straight ahead; the middle is looking to its right; and the bottom is the one I did, looking to the left.
The end result still looks great in my opinion, although, I will definitely refine the position in future, and use more layers to make the colour change more gradual.
Closing
That is all for this week. Appreciate you taking the time to read this. Next we will look at the various effect that are applied after colour applications, namely water slide decals and weathering.
