Don Suratos’s MAQUINA mecha modelling competition has an out of the box category, which requires the entry not have any customisation aside from painting. For my 2020 entry I entered this custom painted MG F91 2.0. Subtly preshaded matt grey armour, contrasted against a glossy candy orange, among other metallic paints. I also tried my hand at glowing eye and camera lens effects, recreated with brushed on paint. Hope you enjoy, and I recommend you check out the other MAQUINA 2020 entries at the Don’s blog.
Kit Review
This is an excellent model kit. The build is simple and enjoyable, and looks great both inside and out. There are no seam lines, and only a few annoying mold lines, mostly on the arms.
The articulation is also excellent, with perhaps two exceptions: the VSBR and the display stand. To me, the VSBRs are the F91’s signature weapons, and should therefore have amazing articulation. Now, it’s not terrible, it is just ok; it can’t do much beyond the first pose above.
The stand, however, is a weak point. It’s designed for use with the LED unit, which looks cool, but, the stand has ZERO articulation. It connects into the F91’s back, which means the poses you can do all have the F91 facing directly forward, which is a shame because this model demands a dynamic, exciting action pose.
I must also note that the heat sink fins that extend from the shoulder armour are not completely colour accurate; they should have a white edge, but are instead moulded completely in grey.
Aside from these three nitpicks, this is a fantastic kit. Great aesthetics, great build experience, great fun to play with once it’s put together. Highly recommend you pick one up.
